Disaster Risk Management (DRM) has become a growing concern around the world since 2014 as the rate of disasters and their impact on populations have been increasing for years. In this part of my website, I’ll be highlighting and encapsulating materials from various sources for those interested in learning the basics of understanding and addressing the risks of natural disasters. Sources will include the United Nations (UNISDR) their foundational document (The Sendai Framework) and their Resilience Scorecards, developed in collaboration with AECOM, IBM and others in my network of collaborators. Though some of my colleagues have changed organizations over the years, their continuing focus and evolving body of knowledge will paint a picture of growing concerns over the impacts of natural disasters—and the tools and techniques evolving to address them.
The overall flow of this website section will be the basics of Disaster Risk Management, to help readers understand the principles behind DRM. This section will be followed by tools and techniques for addressing the perils of disasters, and then examples of DRM programs and current thinking as the science of DRM expands to more fully address the growing global threats caused by climate change, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
